VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) – What was just meant to be a jaunt around Lacamas Lake for a couple of 14-year-old boys turned out to be a dramatic, high-angle water rescue.  Camas Fire crews responded to a report of a person stuck in the water and possibly clinging to a log in Lacamas Lake Sunday evening, where the spring snow melt has the water running high and cold, and swirling with a lot of debris.   Upon arrival they learned a teenage boy had slid off the trail and wound up waist-deep in water, unable to get out.  His friend stayed with him and was also in the water, clinging to some...

Ten climbers scrambling on a rock formation at Garden of the Gods Park were brought down by a high-angle rescue team Thursday.  The city defines scrambling as climbing on a rock more than ten feet above its base without proper equipment. It is prohibited in Colorado Springs and the Fire Department says the climbers could face up to a $500 fine. The Colorado Springs Fire Department was alerted to the climbers by concerned onlookers, but say the climbers themselves were resistant to help.  According to the Fire Department, the climbers are on the Tower of Babel formation. Toledo fire Lt. Doug Palicki flipped upside down, hanging from a sturdy orange rope, about 40 feet above the ground. He slid down the rope before righting himself and landing with both feet firmly on the floor of Huntington Center. “Basic techniques,” he said as he stood. The lieutenant was one of 12 firefighters from the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department who spent several hours Monday morning doing technical rope and high angle training — rappelling from rafters nearly 100 feet from the ground. The members of the department’s regional Technical Rope Rescue Team, from...

The new boardwalk at Little River Falls presents a different set of challenges to rescue personnel. The park installed a new boardwalk at the falls at the north end of Little River Canyon National Preserve. The boardwalk was designed to improve visitor safety in an area of the park that averages three high-angle rescues a year. “The boardwalk changes the way rescues can be done, presenting new challenges to the rescue teams,” Chief Ranger Troy Mueller said. Members of the Fischer Rescue Squad and Adamsburg Fire Department joined the preserve staff Saturday in high-angle rescue training...
