ESCANABA — According to Delta County Sheriff Gary Ballweg, it costs around $10,000 to maintain the Delta County Search and Rescue team each year. The volunteer rescue group is funded by private donations and grants from individuals and companies.  They were able to purchase new equipment thanks to a successful fundraiser last year. The new equipment cost a little over $5,000. Their new ice rescue suits are designed for extreme cold weather rescues. The Search and Rescue team responds to 12-15 ice rescues in a season. But they haven’t had any rescues yet this year. If you...

Tuesday night’s rope rescue was a little more tricky: because it was night time, rescuers did not want to use a helicopter to evacuate the hikers, so the team used ropes to rescue the four, using maneuvers that took several hours to...

An injured worker, who was dramatically rescued from a high-rise construction site in the Docklands, dislocated his shoulder by throwing his arms out as he fell through a hole in the top floor of the building, according to paramedics. A crane was used to lower the 21-year-old man, originally reported as older, from the rooftop of the Aurecon Centre construction site, on the corner of Collins and Merchant streets, to the ground, nearly an hour-and-a-half after the accident happened about 12.20pm.
